Theatre's Successful Bid for Cash for Communities Funding

Theatre Volunteers, Maureen Harling and Olive Sharples, representing the members of Rhythm & Brews, were successful in a bid for funding from Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council's Cash for Communities.

Maureen and Olive took part in a 'Dragon's Den' style presentation at Mill Hill Community Centre on Monday 23rd March 2009. They competed against around 30 other groups from the area and had two minutes to state their case for £150 to buy matching blouses for the troupe of 10-15 group members.

After performing their 2 minute 'Modern Millie' routine, the group received rapturous applause and shouts of 'More!'.  Other local community groups were then given the chance to vote for the projects that felt were most worthy to share the money available.

The Thwaites Empire Theatre's Rhythm & Brews received the most points and were delighted to be awarded a cash prize to buy the much-needed costumes.

Chief Executive, Harriet Roberts praised Maureen and Olive for their efforts.  'The girls really brought a smile to the faces of the audiences.  They love to dance and I think that is what shone through.  I'm really proud of them and I think they really enjoyed the chance to see what other groups are up to.  We even got a couple of bookings for the troupe so it was a win, win all round'.

Rhythm and Brews is a song and dance exercise group organised in partnership with Age Concern's Ageing Well Co-ordinator Alison Hartley and the Thwaites Empire Theatre. The group meets at the theatre every Wednesday morning, performing gentle exercise in the form of simple routines to songs from the shows.

Anyone is eligible to join, no rhythm necessary.
