'There's never been a better time to get involved', that's the message from Chief Executive Harriet Roberts when she speaks at the Open Evening on the 1st of April.

A wealth of new opportunities have been created for volunteers to learn new skills and make friends as part of the Centenary Your Heritage Project and the projected expansion of the charity.

Harriet will be speaking on Wednesday when she will explain how the Lottery money will help to collate and present a fascinating history of the venue.

The Empire Cinema was rescued from dereliction in the 1970s by local people who have restored the theatre and now operate as a successful trading charity.

Harriet said 'In the last twelve months we have received funding from the two biggest donors to charity in the UK, The National Lottery and Freemasonry.  Once upon a time nobody would take this idea seriously and if you'd seen the state of the place you could understand why they thought it could never happen.  But it has!

The Community have proved that with teamwork and vision you can make the impossible possible and having that affirmation from these big organisations shows that the Empire has a very important role to play.

The Centenary provides the ideal opportunity to document and celebrate that journey and most importantly we need to make sure that we secure the future of the venue for the next 100 years.'

A raft of new opportunities have been created for volunteers to get involved with, including oral history researchers, performers, back stage staff, cleaners and administrators.
