'BIG HAIRDO' APPEAL

A theatre group are appealing to local hairdressers to lend a hand with their forthcoming musical, 'A Slice of Saturday Night'.  The production is being staged at the Thwaites Empire Theatre at the end of July and they are appealing for volunteers to help create the big hair backcombed look.  Producer, Roger Nuttall explained that the show is set in a nightclub and follows the story of a group of girls and boys on a typical Saturday night out.  'It's a very funny show, with one song after another that mimics the big artists of the time'.

Mandy Stableford is a hairdresser and volunteer at the theatre, she has been showing the girls how to backcomb and style the girls' hair.  'I remember the days when some girls used to spend all day getting ready for a night out.  We used to use old stockings stuffed into a pad and grip the hair over the top to give it as big a lift as possible.  We only used to wash it once a week - because you couldn't achieve those styles if the hair was newly washed.
