DESIGN DAISY THE COW WINNER ANNOUNCED!

DESIGN DAISY THE COW WINNER ANNOUNCED!

There was an 'udderly' fantastic response to a colouring competition as a herd of 3 thousand cows descended on the Thwaites Empire Theatre.  The venue launched a competition to design Daisy the bovine star of this year's professional pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk.

The entries and designs came from across the county for the prize of £100 and the chance for the winner to bring their whole school to a private performance of the show.

John Brooking, costume designer (seen below) explained, ‘The sorting, shortlisting and judging process took 6 hours from start to finish and there were some fantastic, imaginative and creative ideas.  In the end we had to choose a design that had the character we were looking for as well as something that was practical to make. ‘

Some of the more colourful ideas included collage, recycled materials, beads and textiles.  In the freehand collection we even had a ‘bat-cow superhero and a Simon Cow-ell!'

Judges carefully considering and selecting

The winner of the competition was 12 year old Georgina Dent of St Christopher's CE High School in Accrington  who submitted her own freehand black and white design of a cow that caught the eye of the judges because of the characterisation of the face and head and shape and shading of the body.

The winning entry below with Tim Lince of Pendle Productions, the writer and director of Jack and the Beanstalk, with John Brooking and Dawn Evans the designers who will create the costume for the pantomime.

The winning entry

The others in the top three were created by Ella Brenna Salvato of St Wilfrids in Blackburn whose design incorporated real dried daisies and wellies and Josie Monk of Broadfield Special School in Oswaldtwistle who designed a collage cow with pink markings and a yellow hat with purple bow.

The competition was sponsored by Blackburn & Darwen Freemasons , Huntleys Icecream and Northern Life Kids Magazine.  The judging panel included members of the Blackburn & Darwen Freemasons, Eddie Coupe of Huntleys, theatre board directors and Northern Life Kids.
